Iwant to say that not only do the cupcakes look awesome, but I agree with everything you said. Deen saying “I wanted to keep this close until I had something to bring to the table” and then bringing pharmaceuticals to the table makes me think all she meant was “I wanted to wait until I could capitalize on this.” And for me, that’s a BIG problem. Otherwise, she can eat, cook, bake and sell all the buttery sugary foods she wants. There is nothing better than butter and sugar after all.

Excellent and very well written post! I am not really as familiar with her as many are. But I do think she will need to decide on what she wants to promote and I hope she makes a choice that benefits herself along with her fans. these cupcakes are gorgeous and love the comfort food story that goes along with them :)

Thank you, Kiri! I agree. No matter Paula Deen’s issues, her recipes are still absolutely yummy. The chocolate malt cake is one of my favorites when craving chocolate.

Regardless of my opinion of Ms. Deen or her current predicament, these cupcakes look amazing. Few things make me swoon more than malted chocolate, what a great cupcake!

I, too, am a big fan of Paula. I read her autobiography several years ago and truly respected her for the struggles she overcame and then her accomplishments. I knew from the news of her health issues and knew there was some controversy, but was too lazy to dig in and find out why. Quite disappointing her decision – and I agree, I think she should have just owned it, moved on, and gone from there with her cooking – take it to a different level. Her boys already do low-fat/healthier versions of her dishes and she’s already made her millions, so she really doesn’t have anything to truly lose at this point. Bummer….but boy, do those cupcakes look Deee-licious! Your story behind the cupcakes is quite poignant – and a great mothering moment. Let them eat cake!

Interesting thoughts on Paula. I agree with you that she wasn’t selling a “healthy” lifestyle and people need to recognize that. Although, I’m disappointed that she is partnering with a drug company just seems like too much. In any event, these look fantastic and I’ll eat them in moderation!!
