decor & design: fashion & food

To launch our Kitchen series, we thought we would start off with a “Red” kitchen to complement our MyFudo™ colors. Photos taken by the talented Michael Higginson, and Irina Danilova. It’s bold, vibrant, and eye-catching. I’d also love to hear some ideas from all you readers out there. What is your dream kitchen? What color schemes would you like to use? What kitchen gadgets would you like to adorn your space? Have you ever heard the saying “everyone gathers around the kitchen?” It’s supposed to be THE place that brings friends and family together. Food, wine, and conversation make the kitchen the liveliest and most fun place in the house. What would you consider the perfect outfit in your kitchen? Would it be casual clothing? Bunny slippers and all? A couture apron with red lipstick? Or simply your birthday suit? My whims of fancy really depend on what the occasion calls for. More importantly, my footwear remains uncomplicated with a pair of flats or barefoot (nothing is a sexy as having no shoes.) However, if I'm spending the whole day cooking or baking in the kitchen, it’s all business. You bet I'll be sporting “Chef Crocs” no matter how unbecoming they may look. Comfort is my priority and I chuck all notions of fashion out the window from the knees down (well, maybe from the ankles down.) I may well just be the first one to raise my hand and admit my feet usually hurt if I'm standing on them for more than a few hours. Kitchen designs all depend on your style, from sleek and modern to rustic wooden cabinets. Some may think a kitchen is incomplete and would simply be naked without a back splash under the cabinets. As for me, a kitchen should look great but also be practical. Out with the 50’s look of laminate cabinets since over time, they start to peel. Today's post we featured the model above, photo taken by Oxilixo, stay turned below for some photography exif data that might help you on your next food-fashion-photo shoot.  Fashion in the kitchen, why not? Putting together your classic ensemble look takes a lot of mix and match. Knowing what goes with what is a passion I’d like to share with all of you. Let’s start off with the war paint. Okay, maybe the term war paint can be a tad drastic. Let’s try to accentuate your features and start with pouty, luscious lips. Try CENTRIFUCHSIA opaque lipstick by Lime Crime for $16. To give onlookers a sexy dare to stare, try Estée Lauder 'Pure Color' Eyeshadow Palette in Blue Dahlia for $45 at Saks Fifth Avenue. This palette will give you those sultry smoky eyes without going completely “Jerseylicious.” We adore all the gals on “Jerseylicious” but if you want a more subtle look, this palette is just for you. To cap off your winning look, check out the printed cocktail dress from Lord & Taylor, the SHOSHANNA STRAPLESS FLORAL-PRINT COCKTAIL DRESS, on sale for $196. You might instead want a beautiful Xhilaration® Juniors Spaghetti Strap from Target for $24.99. However way you put your kitchen together, it should have an inviting ambiance where family and friends, both old and new, can share a delicious meal and have a great time enjoying each other’s company.

Hi Ellie, Red is one of my favorite colors.

  • August 29, 2011 at 6:25 pm //

Althugh blue is my fav color – NOT good for a kitchen in my opinion. I think a wwarm, cozy red induces hunger and just feels ‘homey’. However, I wouldn’t refuse that kitchen if offered to me – it’s gorgeous. As for what I wear when cooking, this sumer – shorts, baggy t-shirt..hair pulled back some way under a yankee baseball cap. Not attractive or sexy, but I highly doubt that model eats much anyway lol

I completely agree! I don’t think I could go for a blue kitchen as well, and baggy shorts with a t-shirt sounds great to me (I could never cook with my hair down). Counting calories is NO FUN, it limits the possibility with food! Thank you so much for commenting.

I think blue can be a lovely color in the kitchen as long as you don’t cover everything in blue! I had my kitchen redone last year and the blue tiles totally make it look chic (in my opinion). Here are some before and after pics (it looks bare so you have to use your imagination a bit!)

Ideal outfit – something comfy with a cute apron on! :)

I have many aprons and collect them when on holiday, recently sporting a Jamie Fifteen, Cornwall with surfer dudes on the pront, quick appropriate since we are at the beach. That dress through I could do for Fashion Week this Thur in Auckland

Hi Alli, what a fun item to collect, I have to admit, I mostly grab this plain-jane white apron that I have (or none) but if I have company, I try to step it up a few notches. The Sufer dudes sounds like so much fun. Thank you so much for commenting and reading.

Hi Dana, thank you for commenting, What’s your dream kitchen?

  • August 30, 2011 at 10:03 am //

Your image is simply striking!! I love everything about it, the colors simply pop. Nicely done!

Hi Kim, thank you so much for commenting, what is your favorite color in the kitchen?

  • August 30, 2011 at 6:16 pm //

I love this kitchen! And I dream about having a very huge kitchen, but I think it’ll remain only a dream… a great one, though!

    • September 5, 2011 at 7:47 pm //

Hi Giulietta, I want a larger kitchen as well, dreams can become an reality = )

  • August 31, 2011 at 12:20 am //

I love how bright these colors are! Very appealing to my eyes!

Oh I absolutely love that kitchen! Simply beautiful =)

Hi Peggy, thank you so much for commenting! Isn’t that kitchen super fab?

  • August 31, 2011 at 3:07 pm //

This kitchen will be perfect because red is my favorite color and wish to have everything in red (minus clothes), and my husband loves modern kitchen just like this. It seems like both of us would agree on this kitchen…not that I’m saying we can afford it. LOL…

    • September 1, 2011 at 3:29 pm //

Hello Nami! I love red too, I think I can wear red well, I have very pale skin, so it goes well with my complexion, but only on special occasions. When people talk about remodeling, I think they spend most of their funds doing the kitchen, it’s “THE” gathering spot.

  • September 1, 2011 at 11:15 am //

Love, love, love the red kitchen offset by the white. So simple and clean. We did ours a few years ago and have enjoy every minute of it.

    • September 1, 2011 at 3:30 pm //

Hi Christopher, thank you so much for commenting. I’m a huge fan of simple, and clean, I heard folks spend the most money on their kitchen, I wonder if that’s true?

  • September 1, 2011 at 12:59 pm //

WOW! The kitchen and the model look stunning! :)))

My kitchen is red too, but to tell you the truth it’s a little bit too much already and I’m thinking of switching to something more calm… like white and turquoise blue, green, etc. As for the kitchen crocs, they are too comfy to skip, I’m with mine even right now :) And for the kitchen attire, comfort is priority number one, but you have to look good too, so I use and old dress that fits perfectly, but I’m too bored with it to wear it outside… no apron or anything else.

    • September 5, 2011 at 7:47 pm //

Hi Nadia, you have a red kitchen, oooo, I would LOVE to see it, I need some inspiration. White and Turquoise sounds dreamy, crocs are hands down a comfort factor, my feet hurt the most when I’m cooking or baking. Thank you so much for commenting.

  • September 2, 2011 at 3:26 am //

Great shot! Love the framing and the red really pops. My dream kitchen would (be bigger than mine!) and probably be infused with country/modern. Although my essential – my huge food processor = love.

    • September 5, 2011 at 7:45 pm //

Hi Megan, I wish my kitchen was bigger too, country modern unfused, sounds just lovely, YES and a huge processor!! I have a smal/med sized.

  • September 3, 2011 at 6:12 am //

Hi myFudo, thank you for visiting my space and leaving your lovely comments. Glad you liked my dish. :)

This kitchen is lovely and modern. I would like a bit of lighter, warm and soothing colours than red in my kitchen. I wish it to be big enough, at the same time everything within optimal reach. Regarding outfit, comfort is the highest priority in kitchen :)

    • September 5, 2011 at 7:44 pm //

Hi there! So glad to have connected! I think a big kitchen is unanimous! I agree on comfort too, when I have guests I try to at least get out of my rugged t-shirt.

  • September 3, 2011 at 8:58 pm //

Lovely kitchen… nice clean lines. I have a white kitchen with red accents. I hate clutter in a kitchen so these clean lines appeal to me.

    • September 5, 2011 at 7:41 pm //

Hi Lisa, oooo, I would love to see your kitchen, me too, I’m the kind of gal that loves clean lines, and no clutter, I seemingly have this habit of cleaning while I cook, I should just let loose!

  • September 3, 2011 at 9:34 pm //

What a beautiful kitchen, I love the bright colours and the open feeling of it!
    *kisses* HH

Love your icon! Thank you so much for commenting = )

  • September 4, 2011 at 7:33 pm //

Thanks for stopping by my blog. Splendid photo and what a kitchen. Although I am a clutterer, I can appreciate that photo’s kitchen aesthetic… knowing it wouldn’t stay that way for a minute the way I cook. Gorgeous fashion shot.

    • September 5, 2011 at 7:40 pm //

Hi Deana, thank you so much for commenting and coming over, thanks for connecting. I think if I would let loose and disregard any mess I made when cooking, it would release more creative juices = )

  • September 5, 2011 at 4:42 am //

This post is fabulous!! My dream kitchen is all white modern/classic mix with a giant vintage chandelier.

    • September 5, 2011 at 7:37 pm //

Hi Marla, all white and modern, sounds pretty fantastic, and YES to the giant chandelier! What color?

  • September 5, 2011 at 10:48 am //

Oh my God, I would love a kitchen like that! Red is my favorite color. Just beautiful!

Hi Jo, thank you! Thanks so much for commenting!

  • September 5, 2011 at 2:24 pm //

My perfect outfit is always my comfy yoga pants, t-shirt, my homemade apron from the 7th grade with retro fabric, and my fuzzy slippers. That is how I roll.

    • September 5, 2011 at 7:35 pm //

Hi Clarkie, My kind of gal, yoga pants, and anything comfy sounds fabulous to me too, if I have guests, I step it up a few notches. Thank you for commenting.

  • September 6, 2011 at 12:24 am //

That is a beautiful kitchen and the red makes it feel warm and inviting. I have to say, I love my cream kitchen with silver appliances though. It’s not my dream one (possibly could be if it were 3 times bigger ;-) ), but it suits me. Lovely post!

  • September 8, 2011 at 11:55 pm //

That is a gorgeous kitchen, I love the pop of red! Love that adorable dress too. ;)

    • September 10, 2011 at 9:25 am //

Hi Faith, isn’t it? The dress is so Rachel Zoe worthy!

  • September 10, 2011 at 7:20 am //

I love all things modern. My entire house is modern inside & out. The interior is mostly white with black. I feel like I live in a cloud. My daughter’s friend came to our house & asked her where all our stuff was. LOL

Loving the feel of the photo it feels like home!

    • September 10, 2011 at 9:23 am //

Hi Sandy, I sure do as well, clean and minimalist. That is just too comical about your daughters friend, I love it.

  • September 18, 2011 at 4:37 am //

What a great post, and that first photo is fantastic! We are on the cusp of a small kitchen remodel, and making the decisions of what we want to live with is incredibly difficult.

  • October 27, 2011 at 11:15 pm //

Thanks for dropping by to my space. Your blog looks very elegant and after looking at your kitchen picture I have to think about remodeling our kitchen. My kitchen at present is pure white and I always wonder what other colour would look nice with it. Now there you go. Why not Red? I am imagining red pepper plant on my kitchen table.

  • November 7, 2011 at 1:12 pm //

Absolutely gorgeous kitchen! I love modern. I remodeled my kitchen as well going towards modern. Love the red and glass and clean lines!

    • November 7, 2011 at 1:26 pm //

Kitchen Remodels are huge projects, what I love most about a kitchen is having extra space, clean lines, being as practical as possible, this is something we don’t take for granted born and raised on the East Coast (NYC) where space is a true treasure.

Hi Tim, your kitchen looks great! I’ve been a cabenit maker and installer for 5 years, and who ever did your kitchen are pros. Its the little things you notice after you’ve done it for a while like the mitres on the furniture kick on the island, crown and valance. The gap between doors and drawers are even, and the colour is consistent throughout. Cherry is great to work with, soft and great to stain, although it does darken with age. I’m just curious about what kind of drawer slide you chose.
