We aren’t sharing what we would call a “find” in the sense that the word is used when we shine the spotlight on small cottage industry purveyors. We are sharing this fudofind because there is nothing like it in the world. Of course, one would have to visit a Murray’s Cheese shop in order to understand our utter awe at the selection of cheeses Murray’s supplies.
But, if you can’t get to Murray’s flagship store on Bleeker Street in Greenwich Village or its Grand Central location. And, if you don’t happen to live near a Kroger in Cincinnati, Atlanta and Houston areas you can always shop online.
Murray’s has been in business since the 1940’s; bringing over hundreds of cheeses to New Yorkers. In 2002 Murray’s opened shop in the Grand Central Market at Grand Central Station. Could you imagine picking up gourmet cheese on your way to catch a train home? The Grand Central Market could supply you with the sausage, produce and a myriad of other products such as gourmet oils and desserts as well. But, it is the delicious aroma of the many cheeses that first reach you when you enter the Grand Central Market.
Murray’s has been shipping across the USA for over 10 years and has currently partnered with Kroger to bring the cheesy best to your neighborhood. And, the best they do bring as it is their mission to bring to you the “greatest cheese selection while staying true to (our) Greenwich Village roots.”
Having just returned from a trip to Manhattan, Murray’s is fresh on our mind. It is hard to pick one specific fact that stands out the most when Murray’s has over 300 cheeses and a cornucopia of gourmet products at its Bleeker Street location. However, one detail does stand out; making Murrays just that much more special than any cheese shop you may visit. Murray’s produces its own Cave Aged Cheeses. Over 100 cheeses ripen in Murray’s cheese cave located directly below the Bleeker Street location. That’s right! The cheeses are ripening, literally, under your nose.
“Cheese caves are temperature and humidity-controlled rooms where each cheese has the right environment to ripen to perfection. Common in Europe, particularly in France, this practice known as affinage was relatively unknown to cheese shops …”
Murray’s is a total experience to be enjoyed as simply as strolling through, letting your imagination run wild or by attending one of their many classes. Murray’s Cheese shop on Bleeker Street is no just a gourmet cheese shop. It is a once in a life time experience for visitors, it is a way of life for its regular customers and it is (at the risk of sounding cliché) a New York state of mind.
